Radio around the block

Students get to know their neighbourhoods

In this interdisciplinary project, students engage with their neighbourhoods. The project takes place as part of an extracurricular activity in collaboration with teachers. Experienced trainers from ORANGE 94.0 work with the students to develop key topics for embedding the school/students in the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is understood to be the area surrounding the school, which may be perceived differently depending on how the students travel to school. Possible questions include:

Which places are popular and which are hidden? Where am I allowed to go and where am I not? Does a neighbourhood have a centre? Are there any issues for which research is required? Which clubs and initiatives shape community life? What does my route to school represent?

Depending on the group sizes, students will work on multiple topics. In the context of "School in Transformation," this project represents an important step in positioning the school within the development of the district. Through diversity in action at school, students develop skills in experiencing diversity and multilingualism. The neighbourhood is explored, discussed, and questioned as a "small unit of identity." The focus is on social positioning, awareness of one's own needs and perceptions, and communication.

Work is carried out on various levels, including through audio descriptions in public spaces, shop interviews (with associations and restaurant owners), and discussion groups. RADIO AUF GRÄTZLTOUR brings together the various project topics and encourages participants with different perspectives (students, parents, shop owners, politicians, residents) to engage in dialogue.

The students use these formats to develop radio programmes that are broadcast on ORANGE 94.0. They conduct their own research, write background texts, and create a project logo and jingle. The project is designed to be participatory so that the students' personal interests and focus areas can be integrated.
