25 years of ORANGE 94.0 in retrospective

Radio is a direct, fast, but fleeting medium. What is said or played can be heard one moment and gone the next. In 2013, ORANGE 94.0 marked its fifteenth anniversary by beginning to chronicle its history, including the fight of radio pirates for open access to radio and free radio in Vienna.

The content is organised into seven thematic routes, each with specific aspects of the main topic. These routes invite listeners to experience 15 years of radio history through listening, reading, and watching.

The radio pirates of the 1980s and 1990s, who paved the way for independent radio stations in Austria, play a significant role in this historical account, along with the organisational strategies and lobbying initiatives of the Pressure Group Freies Radio and the Verein Freies Radio Wien in the mid-1990s. Their efforts, which reached a peak with the launch of ORANGE 94.0 on August 17, 1998, were driven by their quest for a distinct frequency.

The creation of a counter-public sphere, one of the functions of free media, is exemplified by various political and social movements in which ORANGE 94.0 has participated over 15 years of broadcasting.

Communities are the source from which the content and protagonists of Freies Radio's programs are drawn. Here, we present various groups that broadcast by and/or for their "own" sub-public, whether in one of the languages spoken in Vienna besides German, a particular music genre, or a specific political issue.

Empowerment refers to the diverse collaborations that were and are necessary for the establishment and continued existence of independent radio stations, which have also led to joint projects in the field of media education, and the contribution that ORANGE 94.0 makes through its workshops on participatory media design and media reflection.

Music and spoken word are equally important elements of the ORANGE 94.0 program, although they are not necessarily present in equal measure. The station provides a platform for local scenes and local music production, oral history via music, and various music genres.

The "Schallspuren" project extends beyond the local area and links up with national and international initiatives. A wide range of projects and radio campaigns showcase this facet of ORANGE 94.0 in the area of networking.

Share your sound tracks

What has been broadcast over the past 25 years and beyond is coming back: as echoes, noise, reverberations, memories, inspiration... We invite everyone to join us on this journey and add their own sound tracks, comment on what already exists, suggest directions for further routes, and remain or become part of ORANGE 94.0.
