ORANGE 94.0 is Vienna’s community radio station – free of advertising, independent of party politics, and operating on a non-profit basis. Since 1998, ORANGE 94.0 has stood for a third broadcasting sector alongside public-service and commercial media: as a complement, a counterpoint, and a space for experimentation in genuine diversity of opinion and media.

Open to everyone

As an open participatory medium, ORANGE 94.0 invites everyone to bring their own radio show on air – regardless of background, age, or prior experience. We provide studios, equipment, expertise, and training. In this way, ORANGE 94.0 enables social participation and strengthens media literacy and democracy.

Space for diversity

Multilingual programmes, radio by children and young people, queer-feminist formats, music ranging from Viennese folk songs to club culture, socio-political content, culture and literature. ORANGE 94.0 broadcasts voices and topics that often find no space elsewhere. The station works in an anti-discriminatory, transparent, and locally rooted way, while keeping a global perspective.

Free of advertising

Our programme is free of advertising, meaning you can listen to our independent radio content without disruptive commercial breaks. This also means we are not subject to ratings pressure and can give space to niche content. Technically, we also prioritise independence: we use non-profit software, favour open-source solutions, and run our own servers. Where large platforms cannot be entirely avoided, it is important to us to offer sustainable and privacy-friendly alternatives to Big Tech.

Media education

Media literacy develops through practice. In our low-cost workshop programme, we teach everything about making radio:  from conducting interviews, recording techniques, and programme production to technical skills. Whether individuals, school classes, youth groups, initiatives, or organisations: our workshops are accessible, hands-on, and can be tailored to specific needs. As an important hub for media education in Vienna, we support independent media production and promote a reflective and critical engagement with the public sphere and information.

Democratic Structures at ORANGE 94.0

ORANGE 94.0 is organised as a participatory and democratic media organisation. Our committees create transparent structures, enable shared decision-making and safeguard the editorial and organisational quality of the station. At the same time, they provide spaces for exchange, discussion and the ongoing development of ORANGE 94.0.

The work of all committees is based on the Leitbild (mission statement) of ORANGE 94.0 and on the Allgemeinen Grundsätze (General Principles), which define roles, responsibilities and decision-making processes.
